A modern twist on the Kentucky Derby classic mint julep, my Basil Julep is a refreshing choice for golden hour sipping. The combination of aromatic basil leaves and chilled whiskey served over crushed ice makes it the definitive cooling drink for warm weather.

The rye’s pepper and spices enhance the fresh basil. Together, they create a perfectly civilized sipping drink. Similar to the mint julep, but for this recipe I used Rye and switched the mint for basil.

Best Whiskey for Julep

Traditionally, a mint julep is made with bourbon. I enjoy it with either rye or bourbon, so the choice is yours.

Muddling Fresh Herbs

When using fresh herbs, muddling is used (that is, gently crush or press them) in the shaker along with the other ingredients. This releases their aroma and flavor for a brighter, fresher cocktail.

Ingredients

For the simple syrup:

  • ¼ cup (50 ml) granulated sugar, or purchased simple syrup
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) water

For the drink:

  • 8 large basil leaves
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) whiskey of your choice
  • Crushed ice
  • Basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Make the simple syrup:

  • Skip this step if using already purchased simple syrup. To a small saucepan add the water and sugar over medium heat. Heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring often. Remove and allow to cool.

Mix the drink:

  • To a rocks glass/tumbler add the basil leaves, whiskey and 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) simple syrup. Use a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon to mash the basil into the liquid.
  • Fill the glass with crushed ice and add a splash of water. Garnish with basil leaves.
