Based on a classic mint julep, this recipe for basil julep is very refreshing and perfect for sipping as the sun goes down. Fresh basil leaves and Whiskey served chilled over ice is the perfect warm weather cooling drink.

A basil julep from the side

The traditional drink of the Derby is the mint julep, but this is my twist on this classic and is just as delicious. The rye’s pepper and spices enhance the fresh basil. Together, they create a perfectly civilized sipping drink. Similar to the mint julep, but for this recipe I used Rye and switched the mint for basil.

Best whiskey for julep

Traditionally, a mint julep is made with bourbon. I enjoy it with either rye or bourbon, so the choice is yours.

Muddling fresh herbs

When using fresh herbs, muddling is used (that is, gently crush or press them) in the shaker along with the other ingredients. This releases their aroma and flavor for a brighter, fresher cocktail.
