A modern twist on the Kentucky Derby classic mint julep, my Basil Julep is a refreshing choice for golden hour sipping. The combination of aromatic basil leaves and chilled whiskey served over crushed ice makes it the definitive cooling drink for warm weather.
¼ cup (50 ml) granulated sugaror purchased simple syrup
¼cup(60 ml) water
For the drink:
8large basil leaves
2ounces(60 ml) whiskey of your choice
Crushed ice
Basil leaves for garnish
Instructions
Make the simple syrup:
Skip this step if using already purchased simple syrup. To a small saucepan add the water and sugar over medium heat. Heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring often. Remove and allow to cool.
Mix the drink:
To a rocks glass/tumbler add the basil leaves, whiskey and 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) simple syrup. Use a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon to mash the basil into the liquid.
Fill the glass with crushed ice and add a splash of water. Garnish with basil leaves.
